Starting August 8th, the Grosse Pointe Music Academy will be sponsoring the non-profit organization Detroit Music Initiative in their efforts to bring music to those for whom it’s out of reach. The DMI will be providing four weekly hour-long classes that are open for enrollment to the public. The classes, which will be held every Monday from 7-8pm at the Harper Woods Public Library, will provide a basic introduction to the guitar for up to eight participants in a well-organized and quiet environment. The classes are open to all ages.
Students will be taken through several important concepts including guitar basics, introductory chords, scales, and rhythm exercises. It’s important to note that this class is not just for kids; the classes are structured to get anyone ages 8-80 (or beyond!) on the road to guitar greatness. The classes also stress the importance of practicing, especially in the beginning stages of playing. While the information being taught will be setup with the individual in mind, the concepts will still be used with the group as a whole, with everyone playing together in a fun and structured way. The Grosse Pointe Music Academy is providing each student with their own blank music book, as well as donating the time of one of their own instructors. This can give the class comfort in knowing they are learning from someone who has experience in both learning and teaching, and can convey the information in an efficient and (most importantly) interesting way. Space is limited.
To register, call the Harper Woods Public Library at (313) 343-2575.
