Rock Band classes are small group lessons typically 3-5 students who work on playing together rhythmically and learning performance skills while playing their songs. An experienced teacher guides the group providing instrument coaching and objective critique. Anyone who has started a band realizes that there is certainly potential for a power clash between the lead guitar player and the lead singer. Maybe the bass player thinks the drummer is too loud or visa versa. Often times these disagreements lead to a whole bunch of wasted time. Bands break up and in extreme cases, friendships are destroyed. A good teacher of the rock band group will help each instrumentalist realize it’s role and ensure that each person in the band is allowed to express themselves musically as well as voice their opinion. At Grosse Pointe Music Academy we suggest to our students and newcomers that we suggest a minimum 6 months experience in lessons before getting into a rock band group. Some students may be ready earlier and some students may not believe they are ready even after 6 months. Most of the time students who decide to jump right in will quickly pick up the skills it takes to keep up with the band. Rock band groups will inspire students to be more dedicated and keep to a practice regimen so that they don’t fall behind their in their band. Nobody wants to let down their band mates! Some bands will choose to cover songs from their favorite bands new and old. Other groups may play songs that an individual or the group writes. Some groups may also be more inclined to practice jamming in a particular style. The teacher will help to facilitate these options by listening to the needs of the group. The goals of the class may vary slightly but all rock band groups are taught skills necessary to be prepared for performance and how to have fun yet work in a professional manner. This type of experience will help band members to better manage their group when they are out on their own. Our groups have the opportunity to perform at GPMA recitals as well as other school and city functions around the Grosse Pointe, Harper Woods, Detroit, and St. Clair Shores areas. If you’ve been asking yourself whether or not you’re ready, maybe it’s time to jump in and join a band. Summer one day classes are available as well as weekly classes.
