Songs Without Words
Come to a FREE Music Together Demo Class at the Grosse Pointe Music Academy and you’ll experience singing and moving to “Songs without Words”. In every Music Together class, you’ll hear the teacher and families singing several songs without words: just “ba, ba” or “dee-dee” or “lu-lu”! Songs sung on what we call “vocables” are an important part of the Music Together Curriculum. They allow children to have a more purely musical experience without being distracted by attempts to process language at the same time. Music is actually learned like a language, so children need to be able to focus on rhythm and melody to develop musical competence. Our native language is often emphasized in our culture- we are a nation of talkers! Singing songs without words often leads to many more responses from children in a Music Together class – a baby may sit with its mouth agape (a sign of listening) and coo on the resting tone at the end of the song, and a toddler may echo the final phrase after the song finishes. Songs without words are a powerful way to connect to music immediately – try our Free DEMO CLASS and you’ll see what I mean!
Learning Through Play at Music Together
Children are little scientists. They essentially teach themselves by using their five senses to explore the world around them and then experiment with the information. The rich environment we create in a Music Together class opens up new musical play possibilities for children. The Music Together song collections (all nine of them!) are musically rich and include a wide variety of meters and tonalities. We don’t try to label these for the child or teach them concepts about music, but instead provide an immediate, direct experience, which the child can then use as a basis for play. At home, continue to provide your child with a variety of music experiences to draw from. Play and sing all kinds of music – jazz, classical, folk, multi-cultural, and of course, your Music Together CDS that you’ll receive when you join our class! Every family who enrolls in a Music Together class receives a beautifully illustrated songbook and 2 CDS- created just for early childhood music education.
