The first important step before starting strings lessons is selecting the right instrument—and making sure it’s the correct size. Our experienced instructors will guide you through the process to ensure you or your child is set up for success from the very beginning. We welcome students of all ages, from young beginners to adult learners. For younger students, we highly encourage a parent to attend lessons to assist with posture, hand positioning, and practice support at home.
Our violin lessons can start as young as age 5. Because of the larger size and physical demands of the cello, we typically recommend cello lessons beginning at age 10 or older. For double bass, students usually start around middle school age or later, depending on their size and strength.
Violins are sized in fractional measurements such as 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full 4/4 size. Violas are similarly measured, but they use inches, with sizes like 12″, 13″, 14″, and larger. Cellos and double basses also come in various sizes to accommodate growing students, making rentals a popular option, especially for younger players who will need different sizes as they grow.
You might wonder—what’s the difference between a violin and a fiddle? In most cases, they are the same instrument! “Fiddle” typically refers to the style of music being played, such as folk, bluegrass, or country music. Similarly, violas and cellos can also be part of traditional fiddle music styles.
